Kagawa has gained a reputation in recent years for the quality of its Three Sanuki Meats (beef, pork, and chicken.) Its temperate climate has also given Kagawa an over-100 year history as the only place in Japan to successfully cultivate olives. This has given rise to novel uses for the fruit, and olive oil lees have been incorporated into livestock feed. The feed creates tender meat with a succulent flavor found nowhere else on earth. Kagawa also borders the Seto Inland Sea, so fresh seafood is a daily part of life here. With abundant seas and bountiful fields, seasonal gourmet in Kagawa is a feast for all the senses.
Setouchi Seafood
The world-renowned fishing grounds of the Seto Inland Sea produce some of the most delicious seafood to be found. Many rivers empty their nutrient-dense waters into the relatively small sea, and the strong currents create an excellent, and flavor-enhancing, environment for marine life.
Sanuki Beef
For over 120 years, Kagawa's farmers have perfected their knowledge and harnessed the temperate climate to create succulent Sanuki beef. This rare delicacy has been praised for its softness, flavor, and delectable finish.
Olive Pork
Olive Pork gets its unique taste and melt-in-your-mouth texture from olive oil lees, which give the meat a sweet, clean flavor with perfect marbling.
Sanuki Cochin Chicken
Sanuki Cochin is a local breed of chicken found only in Kagawa. Its meat is tender and flavorful, and its low fat content makes it a good choice for health-conscious diners. It is also sometimes called Olive Jidori.
The Bounty of the Sanuki Plains
Kagawa's excellent year-round climate makes it a heaven for agriculture, and fresh fruits and vegetables are available year-round. Soft and crisp asparagus, broccoli, lettuce, and other vegetables are well-known, as well as unique local cultivars like kiwi fruits and strawberries.
